Book excerpt: William Shawcross's official biography of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, published in September 2009, was a huge critical and commercial success. One of the great revelations of the book was Queen Elizabeth's insightful, witty private correspondence. Indeed, The Sunday Times described her letters as "wonderful . . . brimful of liveliness and irreverence, steeliness and sweetness." Now, in Counting One's Blessings, Shawcross has put together a selection of her letters, drawing on the vast wealth of material in the Royal Archives and at Glamis Castle. Queen Elizabeth was a prolific correspondent, from her early childhood before World War I to the very end of her long life at the beginning of the twenty-first century, and her letters offer readers a vivid insight into the real person behind the public face.

Indeed the Sunday Times described her letters as 'wonderful ... brimful of liveliness and irreverence, steeliness and sweetness.' Queen Elizabeth was a prolific correspondent from her earliest childhood and her letters offer readers a vivid insight into the person behind the public face. They reveal - in her own words - the little girl writing to her family; the young woman who, eventually, accepted Prince Albert's proposal; the Duchess of York, embracing the public role demanded of her, on royal tours both at home and abroad. They reveal, too, her shock when she and her husband realized that he would become King, the dreadful toll exacted by the Second World War, culminating in the King's tragically early death, and her determination to find a role for herself during her long widowhood. Full of wit, acute observation and a deeply held sense of duty, Queen Elizabeth's letters offer a chronicle not only of her long life, but of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction The Origin Of Prayer And Thanksgiving How to Make One a Believer... Scientific Thought and Miracles Luck and “If Only.” Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction I was just talking to an acquaintance of mine who comes under the category of “why should such a thing happen to me, I didn’t do anything to deserve this…” Believe it or not, there is still a large percentage of such humans in this particular category, possibly in our own family, or around you. It is possible, we being human have done the same thing one time or the other in our lives, when we find ourselves blaming everyone and everything else around us, for a bit of ill luck, a lost chance or opportunity, or any other little mishap that came our way. This book is going to tell you a little bit about faith, miracles, your blessings, and just a word of Thanksgiving. It is also going to tell you all about the reasons why so many people like to blame a superior power for all that has gone wrong with their lives. This is natural, it happened 5,000 years ago, it happens today, and it is going to happen 5,000 years from this day onwards. That is because we are so human, and would rather blame fate, a higher supreme power, luck, or anything else for whatever is going on in our lives today. We definitely do not want the responsibility for the mess that we have made of our own lives by using our own natural analytical abilities, judgment, mental powers, intellect, or any other power, given to us by nature, with which she had programmed mankind to survive. Man is basically a slothful creature, physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Also, he is always on the defensive. Anything he did that turned into a catastrophic end, is definitely not to be blamed upon him. One does not intend to take responsibility of anything or any of his actions, as long as there is someone else upon whose shoulders he can lay the blame. This immature mental outlook has been the reason why so many of us make foolish judgments, because we are not willing to listen to reason or advice. We are absolutely capable of thinking for ourselves and fending for ourselves, thank you.

Download or read book Mythical Me written by Richella Parham and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IVP Readers' Choice Award Do you ever find yourself stuck in the comparison trap? Speaker and author Richella Parham knows what this feels like. "I couldn't break free from admiring one person's achievements, someone else's personality, another's skills, yet another's relationships. And don't get me started on how I looked at other people's appearances," she writes. "I was haunted by the admirable attributes of other people, certain that I could never match their worthiness. No matter how well-intentioned the teaching or pithy the advice, I found that most of it didn't help me change my thoughts, feelings, or actions." While there are no easy answers, Parham has identified cultural and spiritual myths about others, God, and ourselves that keep us trapped. From there the journey is a spiritual one. We can pick up practices that help us walk in the freedom of Christ with confidence in ourselves. If you've ever suffered from tortured moments of comparison on Facebook, in the office, or in the hallway at church, you'll benefit from this fresh perspective.

Book excerpt: As a child, when Robert Bly skinned his knee, his mother would always remind him to count his blessings because the injury could be worse. At the time, he found it irritating, but as an adult, he has realized the wisdom of her approach. Moreover, he has learned that in the overwhelming majority of cases, the sum of our blessings is greater than the sum of our problems. With that in mind, he offers Count Your Blessings, a fascinating mix of more than 100 often overlooked blessings-from the seemingly trivial to the highly significant. The brief entries-on subjects such as anesthesia, flowers, opposable thumbs, and Post-it Notes-are accompanied by a unique self-scoring system that allows the reader to see in mathematical terms that the blessings in our lives almost always outnumber the misfortunes. Readers will experience an increasing level of gratitude as they are reminded of the everyday items and experiences that make life more enjoyable and satisfying.
