Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All autobiographers are unreliable narrators. Yet what a writer chooses to misrepresent is as telling -- perhaps even more so -- as what really happened. Timothy Adams believes that autobiography is an attempt to reconcile one's life with one's self, and he argues in this book that autobiography should not be taken as historically accurate but as metaphorically authentic. Adams focuses on five modern American writers whose autobiographies are particularly complex because of apparent lies that permeate them. In examining their stories, Adams shows that lying in autobiography, especially literary autobiography, is not simply inevitable. Rather it is often a deliberate, highly strategic decision on the author's part. Throughout his analysis, Adams's standard is not literal accuracy but personal authenticity. He attempts to resolve some of the paradoxes of recent autobiographical theory by looking at the classic question of design and truth in autobiography from the underside -- with a focus on lying rather than truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when national cinemas in France and Japan have been marginalized on world screens, movies from and about Ireland have attracted huge audiences and captured top international prizes (The Crying Game), including an Academy Award (My Left Foot). In Contemporary Irish Cinema, James MacKillop takes a variety of approaches in the treatment of films and film makers. Essayists, like Harlan Kennedy, John Hill, Martin McLoon, and Brian Mcilroy, represent leading journalists and critics; other contributors include young scholars well grounded in current cinematic and literary theory. The authors probe cinema's rewriting of Irish history, from the controversial Michael Collins and In the Name of the Father to playwright Stewart Parker's overlooked miniseries on Ulster sectarianism, Lost Belongings. Jim Loter brings the writings of Martin Heidegger to bear on Cathal Black's dark comedy, Pigs. Attitudes toward the institutional church are revealed in Pamela Dolan's analysis of Playboys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young Canadian marches over the Pyrenees and enters into history by joining the International Brigades—men and women from around the world who volunteered to fight against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. This new edition of Ted Allan’s novel, This Time a Better Earth, reintroduces readers to the electrifying milieu of the Spanish Civil War and Madrid, which for a short time in the 1930s became the epicentre of a global struggle between democracy and fascism. This Time a Better Earth, first published in 1939, tells the story of Canadian Bob Curtis from the time of his arrival in Spain and the idealism and trials of the international volunteers. Allan’s novel achieves the distinction of being both a work of considerable literary and historical significance and a real page-turner. This is the first installment of a series of titles to be published in the Canadian Literature Collection under the Canada and the Spanish Civil War banner. This is a large-scale project devoted to the recovery and presentation of Canadian cultural production about the Spanish Civil War (spanishcivilwar.ca), directed by Bart Vautour and Emily Robins Sharpe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing interdisciplinary and global perspectives, this book examines historical and contemporary changes in secondhand economies, including the emergence and specialization of secondhand venues, the materials involved, as well as the cultural significance of secondhand things and the professions associated with them. The objects in focus range from used clothing, scrap and waste materials, to antiquities and used cars, thrift stores and circular economies. Growing concerns with sustainability in the West have helped bring about the ‘rediscovery’ of practices of clothing re-use, re-purposing and re-cycling at the same time as major high-street retailers are establishing programs to return used clothing to their stores for re-sale or recycling. As the contributions to this edited volume demonstrate, recent concerns with the fast pace and adverse effects of global commodity flows have increased the scholarly attention to secondhand economies, both in terms of their history and their significance for livelihoods and sustainability. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal, Business History.

Deeply in love, the two are also deeply committed to the success of the DiNamico-Phipps Company of DynaTech, a leading marine engineering firm headquartered in Buffalo, NY. Georgie's steady recovery from the head injury she suffered in Afghanistan—and the company's survival of a hostile takeover attempt—means the couple can finally concentrate on planning their wedding. Or so they thought, until an unseen event propels their relationship into turbulent waters. Lori Phipps, the president of the company’s DynaCraft Yachts division is a master boat builder—and a master player when it comes to loving women. Until she crosses paths with someone unlike anyone she’s ever met before. Unfortunately, Lori’s past is about to catch up with her in the very slinky form of a not-so-casual hook-up. Stay With Me is the stunning follow-up to Sheryl Wright’s popular romance, Don’t Let Go.

Book excerpt: Entertainer and national treasure Wendy Harmer tells all in her frank, fearless and funny memoir, Lies My Mirror Told Me. 'I've always believed where there's a chance, you have to take it . . . or invent it.' Wendy Harmer has had an extraordinary life. From being born with a severe facial deformity, to performing as a stand-up comedian, a national television host and then the highest paid woman in the cut-throat world of Sydney FM radio ... Wendy's tale of overcoming adversity is told with her trademark in-your-face frankness and celebrated wit. Starting life in rural Victoria, Wendy describes her childhood in remote one-teacher, one-room country schools. As her teacher father moved around the state to take up new postings, Wendy, the 'funny looking' kid often in the wrong colour school uniform, developed strategies to find new friends and fit in. When she was ten years old, her mother went missing. It wasn't until she was well into her teens that Wendy had the reconstructive facial surgery that had long promised to transform her from a 'witch' into a 'princess', but fell agonisingly short. Somehow, despite her initial setbacks and emotional turmoil, Wendy showed the strength of character to carve her own way in the world. From political journalism, she took her first tentative steps on Melbourne's tiny stages in comedy revue, then struck out as a solo performer in stand-up comedy. She would make her mark internationally before coming home to entertain Australians for four decades on stage, in print, television and broadcasting. In Lies My Mirror Told Me Wendy reflects on her life - one of the most unlikely success stories you will ever read. 'This is what a trailblazer looks like. Wendy Harmer is both the irresistible force AND the immovable object'. Andrew Denton 'Deeply moving, wise, hilarious and raucous . . . there's so much to love in this book.' Amanda Keller
