Download or read book A Companion to Luis Buñuel written by Gwynne Edwards and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luis Buñuel (1900-1983) was one of the truly great film-makers of the twentieth century. Shaped by a repressive Jesuit education and a bourgeois family background, he reacted against both, escaped to Paris, and was soon embraced by André Breton's official surrealist group. His early films are his most aggressive and shocking, the slicing of the eyeball in Un Chien andalou (1929) one of the most memorable episodes in the history of cinema. The Forgotten Ones (1950) and He (1952), made in Mexico, were followed, from 1960, in Spain and France, by the films for which he is best known: Viridiana (1961), Belle de jour (1966), Tristana (1970), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). Gwynne Edwards analyses the films in the context of Buñuel's personal obsessions - sex, bourgeois values, and religion - suggesting that the film-maker experienced a degree of sexual inhibition surprising in a surrealist. GWYNNE EDWARDS is Professor of Spanish at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Download or read book Crossfire written by Roberta Johnson and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marriage of philosophy and fiction in the first third of Spain's twentieth century was a fertile one. It produced some truly notable offspring—novels that cross genre boundaries to find innovative forms, and treatises that fuse literature and philosophy in new ways. In her illuminating interdisciplinary study of Spanish fiction of the "Silver Age," Roberta Johnson places this important body of Spanish literature in context through a synthesis of social, literary, and philosophical history. Her examination of the work of Miguel de Unamuno, Pio Baroja, Azorin, Ramon Perez de Ayala, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Gabriel Miro, Pedro Salinas, Rosa Chacel, and Benjamin Jarnes brings to light philosophical frictions and debates and opens new interpersonal and intertextual perspectives on many of the period's most canonical novels. Johnson reformulates the traditional discussion of generations and "isms" by viewing the period as an intergenerational complex in which writers with similar philosophical and personal interests constituted dynamic groupings that interacted and constantly defined and redefined one another. Current narratological theories, including those of Todorov, Genette, Bakhtin, and Martinez Bonati, assist in teasing out the intertextual maneuvers and philosophical conflicts embedded in the novels of the period, while the sociological and biographical material bridges the philosophical and literary analyses. The result, solidly grounded in original archival research, is a convincingly complete picture of Spain's intellectual world in the first thirty years of this century. Crossfire should revolutionize thinking about the Generation of '98 and the Generation of '14 by identifying the heterogeneous philosophical sources of each and the writers' reactions to them in fiction.
Download or read book Melody & Harmony for Guitarists written by JOHN W. DUARTE and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this book is to help the reader to understand the language of music and how it works in relation to the guitar. It is not intended as a substitute for all other lines of study, but it will provide a basic knowledge that can be expanded and developed. the reader is urged to read as wide a range of books as possible and to examine whatever music he or she possesses to identify further examples of the points discussed. the examples should be played and carefully listened to. the study of music is sterile if confined to making marks on paper, no matter how well understood intellectually; no real value attaches to a theoretical study of music unless it is directly related to aural experience and its value is reduced further if it is not related to the music of one's instrument.Contents include Musical Sounds and Their Origins, the Organization of single notes, Melody, Intervals, the Beginning of Harmony-Triads, Functional Harmony and Cadences, Primary Harmony and Cadences, Primary Triads and Substitution, Modulation and Transition, Secondary Sevenths, Other Diatonic Secondary Sevenths, the Cadential Six-four, the Dominant Ninth, Secondary Ninths, Chords of the Eleventh and Thirteenth, Chromatic Alteration of Diatonic Chords, chromatic Harmony, Remote Modulation, Pedal Points, and Steps Beyond

Download or read book The Advanced Theory of Language as Choice and Chance written by Gustav Herdan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In trying to give an account of the statistical properties of language, one is faced with the problem of having to find the common thread which would show the many and multifarious forms of language statistic- embodied in scattered papers written by linguists, philosophers, mathe maticians, engineers, each using his own professional idiom - as belong ing to one great whole: quantitative linguistics. This means that the investigator has to find the system of this branch of science which would enable him to arrange the vast material in an orderly fashion, and present it as an organic whole. Such a system is conceived in this book, as comprising the following disciplines as the four main branches of literary statistics: Statistical Linguistics, Stylostatistics, Optimal Systems of Language Structure, and Linguistic Duality (Parts I-IV). The Introduction is meant to define the position of the book with regard to both, linguistics and statistics.
