Barbara Nadel will impress fans of Andrea Camilleri and Jason Goodwin. 'Riveting... Nadel takes us far beneath the surface of the city's ancient streets... A heady and stunningly exciting take on the crime genre' - Lancashire Evening Post When Emine Aksu, the flamboyant wife of an Istanbul style guru, suddenly goes missing, Inspector Cetin Ikmen's investigation leads him deep into her strange and colourful past. Emine was a hippie when she was younger, who wholeheartedly enjoyed the liberated lifestyle that swept across the city when the western Europeans flooded into Istanbul in the sixties. According to her husband, Emine never really left behind the free love pleasures she discovered back then and he suspects she was visiting an old friend at the time of her disappearance. The skeleton of a woman has been discovered in one of the large plant containers. Could these two bizarre incidents be linked? What readers are saying about Pretty Dead Things: 'A well planned novel with a mixture of the politics and social history of Istanbul as a background to a thrilling mystery starring Inspector Ikmen' 'The plot is one of her [Barbara Nadel's] best and her characters [...] have become fully fleshed individuals by this point in the series'
Download or read book Zombies and Sexuality written by Shaka McGlotten and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 2000s, zombies have increasingly swarmed the landscape of popular culture, with ever more diverse representations of the undead being imagined. A growing number of zombie narratives have introduced sexual themes, endowing the living dead with their own sexual identity. The unpleasant idea of the sexual zombie is itself provocative, triggering questions about the nature of desire, sex, sexuality, and the politics of our sexual behaviors. However, the notion of zombie sex has been largely unaddressed in scholarship. This collection addresses that unexamined aspect of zombiedom, with essays engaging a variety of media texts, including graphic novels, films, television, pornography, literature, and internet meme culture. The essayists are scholars from a variety of disciplines, including history, theology, film studies, and gender and queer studies. Covering The Walking Dead, Warm Bodies, and Bruce LaBruce's zombie-porn movies, this work investigates the cultural, political and philosophical issues raised by undead sex and zombie sexuality.

Trouble was, he didn’t ask Rose what she thought of the idea. It’s been more than sixty years since that night, and she’s still sixteen, and she’s still running. They have names for her all over the country: the Girl in the Diner. The Phantom Prom Date. The Girl in the Green Silk Gown. Mostly she just goes by “Rose,” a hitchhiking ghost girl with her thumb out and her eyes fixed on the horizon, trying to outrace a man who never sleeps, never stops, and never gives up on the idea of claiming what’s his. She’s the angel of the overpass, she’s the darling of the truck stops, and she’s going to figure out a way to win her freedom. After all, it’s not like it can kill her. You can’t kill what’s already dead.

Book excerpt: 'A superlative piece of writing... provocative, loving and profound' THE TIMES 'Without exaggeration, an awe-inspiring achievement' NIGELLA LAWSON 'Moving, funny, and liable to unexpectedly cause me to tear up' NEIL GAIMAN An Irish Times Book of the Year In this profoundly moving and remarkable book, journalist Hayley Campbell explores society's attitudes towards death, and the impact on those who work with it every day. 'If the reason we're outsourcing this burden is because it's too much for us,' she asks, 'how do they deal with it?' Would facing death directly make us fear it less? Inspired by her own childhood fascination with the subject, she meets embalmers and a former death row executioner, mass fatality investigators and a bereavement midwife. She talks to gravediggers who have already dug their own graves and questions a man whose job it is to make crime scenes disappear. Through Campbell's incisive and candid interviews with people who see death every day, she asks: Does seeing death change you as a person? And are we all missing something vital by letting death remain hidden? 'Essential, compassionate, honest' Audrey Niffenegger, author of THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE 'Never macabre... poignant... Download or read book Corpus Perspectives on Patterns of Lexis written by Hilde Hasselgård and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hallmark of corpus linguistics is the study of patterns of language use. The studies presented in this volume all use corpora to investigate patterns of lexis from various perspectives. The first section, “Sequence and Order”, presents theoretical and practical aspects of the linguist’s task of uncovering the principles that determine such patterns. The next section, “Competing Constructions”, discusses the relationship between lexical patterns with similar meanings in the light of diachronic, regional and register variation. New developments in terms of lexicogrammatical meaning and patterning are dealt with in the section “Emerging Patterns”. The final section, “Correlating patterns and meaning”, discusses ways in which meaning can be studied in corpus data despite the lack of narrowly defined search terms. Though situated at different points on a continuum between lexical and grammatical emphasis, the studies all confirm the inseparability of lexis and grammar.
