Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques in the neurosciences are evolving rapidly. There are currently very few volumes dedicated to the methodology - ployed by neurosclentlsts, and those that are available often seem either out of date or limited m scope. This series is about the methods most widely used by modern-day neurosclentists and 1s wrltten by their colleagues who are practicing experts. Volume 1 will be useful to all neurosclentists since It concerns those procedures used routinely across the widest range of subdisciplines. Collecting these general techniques together m a single volume strikes us not only as a service, but will no doubt prove of exceptIona utilitarian value as well. Volumes 2 and 3 - scribe all current procedures for the analyses of amines and their metabolltes and of ammo aads, respectively. These collections will clearly be of value to all neuroscientlsts working m or contemplating research m these fields. Similar reasons exist for Volume 4 on receptor binding techniques since experimental - tails are provided for all types of llgand-receptor bmdmg, including chapters on general prmciples, drug discovery and - velopment, and a most useful appendix on computer programs for Scatchard, nonlinear, and competitive displacement analyses. Volume 5 provides procedures for the assessment of enzymes - volved m biogenic amme synthesis and catabolism. Volumes in the NELJROMETHODS series will be useful to neurochemists, -pharmacologists, -physiologists, -anatomlsts, psychopharmacologists, psychlatnsts, neurologists, and chemists (organic, analytical, pharmaceutical, medicinal), in fact, everyone involved m the neurosclences, both basic and clinical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late antiquity saw a proliferation of Christian texts dwelling on the emotions and physical sensations of dying, not as a heroic martyr in a public square or a judge's court, but as an individual, at home in a bed or in a private room. In sermons, letters, and ascetic traditions, late ancient Christians imagined the last minutes of life and the events that followed death in elaborate detail. The majority of these imagined scenarios linked the quality of the experience to the moral state of the person who died. Death was no longer the "happy ending," in Judith Perkins's words, it had been to Christians of the first three centuries, an escape from the difficult and painful world. Instead, death was most often imagined as a terrifying, desperate experience. This book is the first to trace how, in late ancient Christianity, death came to be thought of as a moment of reckoning: a physical ordeal whose pain is followed by an immediate judgment of one's actions by angels and demons and, after that, fitting punishment. Because late ancient Christian culture valued the use of the imagination as a religious tool and because Christian teachers encouraged Christians to revisit the prospect of their deaths often, this novel description of death was more than an abstract idea. Rather, its appearance ushered in a new ethical sensibility among Christians, in which one's death was to be imagined frequently and anticipated in detail. This was, at first glance, meant as a tool for individuals: preachers counted on the fact that becoming aware of a judgment arriving at the end of one's life tends to sharpen one's scruples. But, as this book argues, the change in Christian sensibility toward death did not just affect individuals. Once established, it shifted the ethics of Christianity as a tradition. This is because death repeatedly and frequently imagined as the moment of reckoning created a fund of images and ideas about what constituted a human being and how variances in human morality should be treated. This had significant effects on the Christian assumption of power in late antiquity, especially in the case of the capacity to authorize violence against others. The thinking about death traced here thus contributed to the seemingly paradoxical situation in which Christians proclaimed their identity with a crucified person, yet were willing to use force against their ideological opponents.
Download or read book Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism in Man V written by W. L. Nyhan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth International Symposium on Human Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism was held in San Diego, California (U. S. A. ) in July and August of 1985. Previous meetings in this series were held in Tel Aviv (Israel), Baden (Austria), Madrid (Spain) and Maastricht (The Netherlands). The proceedings of each of these meetings were published by Plenum. The next meeting will be in Japan. This Symposium differed from those that went before in that it per mitted us to honor Dr. J. E. Seegmiller, Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Diego, for his many contributions to our understanding of purine metabolism in man. This publication is dedicated as a Festschrift to Jay. Dr. Richard W. E. Watts delivered the keynote address outlining in scholarly fashion the history of Dr. Seegmiller's accomplishments in research on purine metabolism and the great number of currently active scientists in this field who have worked with him. This address is published as the first contribution to Volume I. Dr. Dewitt Stetten, Jr. , was scheduled to be the speaker at our banquet. Unfortunate ly, he could not be with us. Dr. Seegmiller has written an appreciation of Dr. Stetten and his contributions to our field, and this has been pub lished following Dr. Watts' paper. The growth of knowledge in purine and pyrimidine metabolism continues to be exponential. The variety of subjects included in these volumes is impressive.

Download or read book Personal Data in Competition, Consumer Protection and Intellectual Property Law written by Mor Bakhoum and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the legal approach to personal data taken by different fields of law. An increasing number of business models in the digital economy rely on personal data as a key input. In exchange for sharing their data, online users benefit from personalized and innovative services. But companies’ collection and use of personal data raise questions about privacy and fundamental rights. Moreover, given the substantial commercial and strategic value of personal data, their accumulation, control and use may raise competition concerns and negatively affect consumers. To establish a legal framework that ensures an adequate level of protection of personal data while at the same time providing an open and level playing field for businesses to develop innovative data-based services is a challenging task. With this objective in mind and against the background of the uniform rules set by the EU General Data Protection Regulation, the contributions to this book examine the significance and legal treatment of personal data in competition law, consumer protection law, general civil law and intellectual property law. Instead of providing an isolated analysis of the different areas of law, the book focuses on both synergies and tensions between the different legal fields, exploring potential ways to develop an integrated legal approach to personal data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Religion 261, Introduction to Family History, is a one-semester course in which you will learn gospel doctrines and principles essential to the work of redeeming the dead and how to find information about your ancestors that is needed to perform saving ordinances for them. The Lord has revealed that a great missionary effort is under way in the spirit world (see D&C 138:28–37). You become part of this great work when you identify your ancestors who did not receive the essential gospel ordinances in this life. It is your privilege to be baptized, confirmed, endowed, and sealed in their behalf in the temple, and males may receive the Melchizedek Priesthood for deceased males there. In this way all of our Heavenly Father’s children can come unto Christ and be perfected in Him. President Wilford Woodruff (1807–98) spoke about the significance of the work of redeeming the dead: “I wish many times that the veil were lifted off the face of the Latter-day Saints. I wish we could see and know the things of God as they do who are laboring for the salvation of the human family who are in the spirit world; for if this were so, this whole people, with very few, if any, exceptions, would lose all interest in the riches of the world, and instead thereof their whole desires and labors would be directed to redeem their dead, to perform faithfully the work and mission given us on earth; so that when we ourselves should pass behind the veil and meet with Joseph and the ancient apostles, and others who are watching over us and who are deeply interested in our labors, we might feel satisfied in having done our duty” (The Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, ed. G. Homer Durham , 152)."

Download or read book Passing Wealth on Death written by Alexandra Braun and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wealth can be transferred on death in a number of different ways, most commonly by will. Yet a person can also use a variety of other means to benefit someone on death. Examples include donationes mortis causa, joint tenancies, trusts, life-insurance contracts and nominations in pension and retirement plans. In the US, these modes of transfer are grouped under the category of 'will-substitutes' and are generally treated as testamentary dispositions. Much has been written about the effect of the use of will-substitutes in the US, but little is generally known about developments in other jurisdictions. For the first time, this collection of contributions looks at will-substitutes from a comparative perspective. It examines mechanisms that pass wealth on death across a number of common law, civil law and mixed legal jurisdictions, and explores the rationale behind their use. It analyses them from different viewpoints, including those of owners of businesses, investors, as well as creditors, family members and dependants. The aims of the volume are to show the complexity and dynamics of wealth transfers on death across jurisdictions, to identify patterns between jurisdictions, and to report the attitudes towards the different modes of transfer in light of their utility and the potential frictions they give rise to with policies and principles underpinning current laws.

Download or read book The Postmortem Brain in Psychiatric Research written by Galila Agam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the dearth of experimental animal models of psychiatric disorders, the study of the effect of the disease state is only possible in tissue derived from patients vs. controls, especially in the target tissue of disease-related changes in the brain. The human postmortem brain offers the most appropriate experimental paradigm towards understanding the etiology of psychiatric disorders. The availability of post-mortem human samples from psychiatric patients and comparison groups in recent years has contributed prominently to the accumulating body of information leading to a better understanding of these disorders. This is the first book to summarize this research approach and the meaningful data which has recently been acquired.
